About the Event

Crying Uncle is Miles and Teo Quale. The band was founded in 2016 by the brothers, as a duo band with invited guest artists. They have had the opportunity to play at venues, including Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles, CA (as guests ofThe Watkins Family Hour), Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, Whippoorwill Arts/Northwest Folklife , Greyfox Bluegrass Festival, and Ogden Music Festival in Utah. Since 2016, both have performed at IBMA’s World of Bluegrass Festival in Raleigh, NC. Miles (fiddle) and Teo (mandolin) have had the privilege of playing with many phenomenal musicians including Marty Stuart, Brittany Haas, Sean Watkins, John Reischman, Darol Anger and Mike Marshall, and bands Sideline Bluegrass Band and Special Consensus. In 2019, Country Music Legend Marty Stuart invited the brothers to perform with his band at Ryman Auditorium. The Duo also performed at the Grand Ole Opry in August 2019, as guests of Connie Smith. Each of them were nominated for the 2021 IBMA Instrumentalist Momentum Award. The brothers, who are also National and State Champion fiddlers and pickers, were 2019 Freshgrass Festival finalists in the fiddle and mandolin contest categories. In 2022, Miles was a recipient of the Whippoorwill Arts Fellowship. When not playing as a duo or with invited guests, the brothers perform with their bluegrass band, Crying Uncle Bluegrass Band (CUBG). The band recently released their fourth CD, The Thing of Dreams. CUBG has opened for bands such as The Del McCoury Band, David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, and Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives. They have performed internationally, in Finland, the Bahamas, and France. In 2018, the bluegrass band was featured on a TEDxTalk with Phoebe Hunt. Winners of the 2018 Pickin’ in the Pines Band Contest in Flagstaff AZ and nominated for the 2021 Momentum Band award at International Bluegrass Music Association’s World of Bluegrass in North Carolina, the band continues to make their mark in the bluegrass community. The Quale brothers are joined by award-winning bassist Jason Howard. The Trio have known each for a number of years and share a passion for music. They have performed at Prescott Bluegrass Festival and Whippoorwill Arts/Northwest Folklife Festival, as well as at Ogden Music Festival. Jason Howard currently plays bass in The Cross-Eyed Possum, The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, and various jazz combos. Jason was ranked 1st in the Arizona All-State jazz competition in 2017 and 2018. The Trio have also shared the stage with many of their heroes, including Roy “Futureman” Wooten and Tristan Clarridge.
